A Single Man

Tom Ford's directorial debut follows the day of an english professor in LA after the death of his partner. He decides in the morning that on this day he will kill himself but all the beauty in the world surrounding him conspires against his plans.

I wasn't sure entirely what to expect with this film, Colin Firth has never (before) struck me as a particularly outstanding actor and i didn't know much about the plot, it had the potential to be just an excuse for massive amounts of product placement for Ford, its so beautifully filmed and the sets and costumes are so romantic and chic it could be mistaken as a feature length perfume advert. But Firth's performance was superb and one key feature that struck me and really spoke volumes within the plot was his play on the saturation to reflect the changes between beauty and sadness.

A great film for anyone who appreciates a well crafted piece of glamorous, 1960s, high fashion indulgence.
